Non Western

Image
This week I will be researching Non-Western art.  " Non-Western art refers to any art objects originating from the cultures and societies outside of the Western world. The West includes the cultures of Europe and the arts utilizing European aesthetics. Arts of colonized areas such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are considered the West, but the arts from the native peoples of these countries are referred to as non-Western art." ( “What Is Non-Western Art?”). North West coast desi gn is "T wo-dimensional formline designs are depicted on objects such as bentwood boxes, clan hats, and house screens, and can also be adapted to embellish three-dimensional objects such as masks and totem poles." ( NORTHWEST COAST FORMLINE DESIGN DEFINITIONS AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES).  Alaska is famous for its overwhelming culture and traditions that lie in the art seen around our beautiful state.  Northwest Coast largely uses four elements: line, shape, color, and

Post Modern

This week I will be researching post-modern artwork.  This is artwork that has been done from 1980 to the present work that is being don e.  " To an extent, postmodernism defied the definition as no one style or theory was able to encompass the entire movement. Nevertheless, post-modern art is generally said to describe any movements that arose from the rejection of Modernism, such as Conceptual art, Pop art, Neo-Expressionist art, Feminist art, and the art of the Young British Artists. Art created within these genres was typically avant-garde and revolutionary, as they reacted against previously formal elements that dictated artistic creation." ( Art in context). Andy Warhol is a famous American post-modern artist who was known as a leader in the visual art movement known as pop art.  This art movement was inspired by popular and commercial culture in the western world.  Generally, the movement was a rebellion against the usual and traditional forms of art.  Below are two f

Early Modern

This week I will be exploring the arts and aesthetics of the Early Modern era.  The Early Modern era took place between 1900 and 1939.  This was a time where the world was going through many changes.  This was due to many developments and growth within subjects such as manufacturing and technologies.  This era also introduced new freedom for artists.  Artists were no longer confined to art specifically to tell a story, depict religion, or present mythical events.  On the other hand, many emotional and historically sad events took place that influenced the art at this time. One theme that influenced art heavily at this time was the Great Depression.  The Great Depression was a worldwide economic depression that took place mostly near 1930.  This was the effect of the stock market crash of October 1929.  This led to the element of strong emotion within the art.  The other elements used is color lack of.  Lack of color paired with the emotion element can easily put the mood as almost dul

The Romantic Era - Preferences and Perspectives

Image
This week I will be exploring the Romantic era.  The Romantic era was most popular between 1800 and 1850.  In this era, we saw artistic, musical, intellectual, and literary movements flourish in Europe.  This era was also somewhat of a reaction to the Industrial Movement which was happening at the time.  The Romantic era has so many different styles.  It focused on elements such as emotion, imagination, and mystery. One style of the Romantic era that I don't necessarily not like but like less than my other choice is Impressionism.  Impressionism opened a new world of modern art.  Impressionism was about capturing moments in time.  This art also used elements such as color, light, and lack of detail.  All these elements created modern scenes of mostly everyday life and landscapes. Below are two famous paintings from this part of the era.  The first one is Paris Street: Rainy Day by Gustave Caillebotte.  It was created in 1877 and is located in Place de Dublin.  This painting prese

The Classical Era

Image
This week I will be exploring the arts of the Classical era and the major influences that were present during this era.  Throughout this era, you can find many types of classicism.  The common elements you can find in art from the Classical era include both neutral emotional feeling and neutral coloring.  On the other hand, one theme in the Classical era is Revolution and Art that I feel holds very much emotion that you can create in the paintings.  Revolution and Art relates to the Classical era in the way the art presents itself and its topics.  In this era you see many pieces of work contributed to war, leadership, and the theme of Revolution and Art is just that.   John Trumbell was a famous American painter.  He was very known for his paintings of the American Revolutionary War.  Above is one of John Trumbell's most famous painting and a painting that is widely known.  This painting is called George Washington before the Battle of Trenton.  This painting was done in 1791 and

Baroque

This week I will be exploring the art found in the Baroque era and the major influences that were present during this specific era.  The Baroque era was a style of art, architecture, music, and dance that was amplified in Europe.  The era lasted from the early 17th century until around the 1740s.  Many characteristics of art done in the Baroque era consists of qualities such as drama, tension, richness, and emotion to achieve awe throughout an audience. Below is a very famous painting known as  Girl With A Pearl Earring .  This painting was done by an artist names Johannes Vermeer in 1665.  I am not completely sure where exactly it was painted, but the painting currently sits at the Mauritshuis in The Hague.  Johannes Vermeer's piece,  Girl With A Pearl Earring , portrays a European women wearing exotic clothing, but most famously, a large pearl earring.  The painting is so well known that it has a reputation of being called the "Mona Lisa of the North."  You can definite

Italian Renaissance

Image
This week I will be talking about works of visual art and architecture from the Italian Renaissance.  The Italian Renaissance covered the 14th century through the 17th century.  This time period is very significant because it is known to be the transitional time from the Middle Ages to modernity. The art piece below is a very well-known work of art from this time period.  It is called the Creation of Adam .  This very famous work of art was created by a very famous and well-known Italian artist named Michelangelo.  Michelangelo "was an Italian sculptor, painter, and architect considered to be one of the most influential artists to come out of the Renaissance period." ( Stockwell, Margaux).   Michelangelo painted this piece of work between 1508 and 1512 on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome. This work holds so much to uncover.  It heavily is a piece of work that presents the audience with the techniques of symbolism.  "In this fresco, God is portrayed
