Post Modern

This week I will be researching post-modern artwork.  This is artwork that has been done from 1980 to the present work that is being done.  "To an extent, postmodernism defied the definition as no one style or theory was able to encompass the entire movement. Nevertheless, post-modern art is generally said to describe any movements that arose from the rejection of Modernism, such as Conceptual art, Pop art, Neo-Expressionist art, Feminist art, and the art of the Young British Artists. Art created within these genres was typically avant-garde and revolutionary, as they reacted against previously formal elements that dictated artistic creation." (Art in context).

Andy Warhol is a famous American post-modern artist who was known as a leader in the visual art movement known as pop art.  This art movement was inspired by popular and commercial culture in the western world.  Generally, the movement was a rebellion against the usual and traditional forms of art.  Below are two famous pieces of work done by Andy Warhol that present this work.  Both pieces use the elements of vibrant color and almost even an element of simplicity.  The first piece is called Marilyn Diptych and was created in 1962.  The second piece is Self-Portrait which was created in 1967.  Both paintings express the elements of color through their vibrancy.  I would love to try to do something like these pieces.

The second post-modern artist I chose is is Cindy Sherman.  Cindy is an American artist whose work mainly consists of photographic self-portraits.  These self-portraits are a little different as they depict herself in different contexts as various imagined characters.  Below are some portraits that were taken for a series that uses the element of imagination through time.  In this series, Cindy wanted to stage herself as stereotypes found in film, literature, etc.  The first one, Magic Time, was done in 1975 and depicts Cindy's want to express her desire to live out a fantasy of glam.  The second photo, Untitled (Marilyn), was done in 1982.  It obviously is a depiction of the famous Marilyn Monroe.  I really enjoy these photographs but it's not necessarily my first choice of art.

The last artist is Gerhard Richter whose art is largely focused on the abstract movement.  In Gerhard's artwork, you can really see where the new age of abstract and expressionism comes together.  In both paintings, you definitely get to see expressionism and abstract come through.  The first painting, Abstract Painting, was created in 1992.  The second image,
Abstraktes Bild (809-1), was created in 1994.  I don't necessarily like paintings like this but I do find them interesting.  I find them interesting because it shows just how far art has come.  A lot of art has definitely become simple in the sense of detail which is branded as minimalistic.  This isn't minimalistic but I think it is simple in the way they don't truly have a defined image.
